In 1964 director/producer Stanley Kubrick created the nuclear war comedic masterpiece “Dr. Strangelove: Or How I Learned To Conclude Worrying and Care For The Bomb”. He followed that with the science fiction masterpiece “2001: A Location Oddysee”. Stanley Kubrick would arrive his creative peak with his next film. An Adaption of Anothony Burgess’novel “A Clockwork Orange.” Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange is one of those films that you will either cherish or dislike. The film centers around the character of Alexander DeLarge (played to perfection by Malcolm McDowell) a 15 year extinct “droog” who with his friends Pete (Michael Tarn), Georgie (James Marcus), and Shadowy (Warren Clarke) drink Milk Laced with drugs at the local “Milkbar” and then go out on the town at night, doing imperfect things to people. During one incident Alex is captured and taken to prison. He finds out about a treatment that can net him of prison. He goes through with the treatment (which will create him sick when he attempts to commit an act of violence), is released from prison and thrown serve into the world, unable to defend himself. Out of all the things that get this movie expansive, the number one element is the performance of Malcolm McDowell as Alex. The entire movie revolves around him so if McDowell’s performance isn’t top notch then the movie isn’t top notch. McDowell was in his behind twenties when he made this movie. In the new Alex is 15 years stale. So although being grand older then his character McDowell plays the adventureous youth wonderfully. Suprisingly McDowell was not nominated for an Academy Award. Another really strong element is the music. Never in my life have I seen a movie (non musical) where the music plays such an considerable role in a film. Gioacchino Rossini’s “The Thieving Magpie” during the fight scence against the rival droogs. “The William Exclaim Overture” played 5 times too hasty during the orgy scene and the exhaust of Ludwig Van Beethoven’s “Symphony no. 9″ are fair a few examples of how music plays an essential role in this film. As far as things being evil with the movie. The only accurate thing is the lack of any accurate supporting cast. Obvious there are a few standout performances. Particularily James Marcus as Georgie and in no means are the rest of the supporting cast awful actors. There impartial isn’t a trusty supporing cast there. But McDowell’s performace makes up for it. This film get’s 5 stars because of 3 things. Number one is the performance of Malcolm McDowell. Number two is the consume of music in such a different and unusual arrangement and number three is the originality of it. This movie came out in 1971 and I haven’t seen any movie like it that came out before or since then. A Clockwork Orange was nominated for several Academy Awards including “best relate” and “best director” but it lost in all categories to William Friedkin’s “The French Connection”

In which high government officials are seen as the honest equivalents of street thugs (fair better at p.r.), demonstrating that nothing has changed in 35 years.

The HD transfer is spectacular. This is how I remember the movie upon its opening in 1971. Pristine, startling, wonderful.

Repeated viewings over the years of worn-out circuit prints, VHS and standard-def DVD had dimmed the movie’s capacity to astonish. Now, in HD, the vivid brilliance, texture and color of the images are restored, and the richness of the images makes a ample incompatibility to the film’s impact. The sound is also wonderful — certainly advantageous to the fresh theatrical release in the days of optical soundtracks.

In addition to the beauty of the Hi-Def report, this is worth owning because (at last) it is a stop approximation of the recent theatrical aspect ratio (conceal shape) ; the theatrical presentation being, after all, the venue for which Kubrick quiet his shots. (Ignore those who claim he meant this film to be seen in full-frame 1.33:1, as in all the previous home video releases. He clearly created it to be seen in theaters, and in theaters he had the image matted to 1.66:1, which is very finish to the aspect-ratio of this HD DVD.)

Buy it; glimpse it on your big-screen 1080 HDTV in a gloomy room, uninterrupted. Sincere horrorshow!

This is a 2-disc “Special Edition,” with the same extras as the standard-def DVD in the fresh (2007) boxed set: commentaries, trailer, unique interviews with Wm. Friedkin, Sydney Pollack, Malcolm McDowell, Wendy Carlos, Mrs. Kubrick, others.

Then hope for a snappily HD release of “Barry Lyndon” (1975), Kubrick’s underappreciated masterpiece following “A Clockwork Orange,” which will also attend greatly from High-Definition.

It is a very favorable example of this type of cinema from the leisurely sixties when directors loved to purchase all kinds of chances with their subject matter, not like today’s pre-packaged films. That three such outstanding actresses as Beryl Reid, Coral Browne and Susannah York were willing to go along with Aldrich for the straggle I salvage fair astounding. Beryl Reid in particular shines, although all three set in stupendous performances. I have heard people criticize the film for being dated, but I don’t acquire that a genuine criticism at all. The enlightened film-goer has to be receptive to other times, other mind-sets, other ways of feeling. If any film invites the viewer to faulty those barriers, this one does. Yes, it is overly long, and could probably have been chop down to half its show length. That is the films astronomical flaw, but like most well-behaved films which seem overly long upon first viewing, it’s impact stays with you. If you can get it past the two-hour heed, I don’t assume you will fetch that this film is lacking anything in quality, sensitivity, or the cumulative power to go. Fair qualified.

This movie is a lot of fun if you do not purchase it too seriously. It is position in the slack 60′s London and features the behind ample Beryl Reid as a soap star under threat at work and home. Tall scenes of the Gateways club in London and the owners – Gina and Smitty as well as some of the regulars, who are outmoded as extras. It is not for the faint at heart; there is a very silly scene appealing an intoxicated Beryl Reid (George) and a couple of nuns in a taxi cab! If you are looking for a movie depicting a healthy lesbian relationship/love narrative then this is not for you!

Mario Van Peebles directed and starred in this film about a group of African-American soldiers (and one white one) on the speed from a snide military officer. The officer (Billy Zane) had the posse occupy some gold from Cuba during the Spanish-American War. He planned to waste them afterwards, but the group proved stronger than he concept and they escaped. They reach benefit to the states and follow Jesse (Van Peebles) to the dream town of his deceased father in west Texas. Jesse has some inner demons to silence and they won’t be collected until he has settled an customary acquire.

The film is racy. However, the movie relies heavily upon typical Western cliches which dampen some of the it’s uniqueness. Nevertheless, the film does raise awareness about all the unlit cowboys and settlers that were so instrumental in taming the West that most people don’t even know existed. An educational film that is quite curious to study.

Mario Van Peebles “Posse” is a movie with flaws, but it treats its source material with respect. Unlike the shallow and funny “Rosewood” Van Peebles “Posse” gives viewers a certain record of what life was like for African-American cowboys at the turn of the century. We obtain to know characters in the tale. The production values are shameful budget, and several roles are miscast, but Van Peebles’ heart is in every second of this film. He loves the material and wants us to learn as grand about these forgotten shaded heroes as he has. Share “spaghetti western”, fraction action flick, allotment historical drama, Posse is a lot of fun to spy. Mario Van Peebles, Billy Zane, Melvin Van Peebles and Salli Richardson in her first role are tremendous. Tis one is worth owining for your collection.

Every once in a while comes something so addicting that the last thing you would want is for it to arrive to an destroy, or abruptly halt. Even in the Anime community, you gain yourself wishing that a series you treasure would go on, only to be disappointed that it finishes rather too soon, or with more questions than answers. Sadly, this is all too honest of the final entry of HIS AND HER CIRCUMSTANCES.

The first four volumes were lots of fun and a delight to view, so what could possibly be imperfect with Volume 5? Is it that the episodes are unpleasant? Can it be that the characters are no longer attractive? The respond to both of these questions are no. The dispute is as palatable as ever, and the characters no less attractive, from their activities, interactions, conflicts, and resolutions. The quandary here is with the show’s conclusion, or therefore lack of it. It starts out entertainingly: the first two episodes continue Yukino’s attempts to fetch her friends’ school play on in time for the culture festival while trying to reassure a now lonesome Arima that she cares no matter what. At the same time, Asaba continues to flirt with the ladies, irritate Arima and Yukino, and surprisingly lends a hand with the play (in addition to Mr. Kawashima) . Furthermore, Takefumi Tonami’s longtime rivalry with Tsubaki Sakura climaxes when he tries to wound her for all the cruel things she’s done to him, only to realize that hatred may not have been what he felt for her after all. The storylines do not feel intrusive here, but work out wonderfully (a predicament that the filler episodes of NADIA suffered from, when they jammed a lot of needless garbage into a expansive sage and almost sank it) .

The dependable problems don’t originate until about three-quarters of the intention through the third episode, where the present turns from a surreal dream Yukino has about helping Arima rid himself of his inner demons to a rerun of the opening theme song and a recap of all that happened from first Yukino’s sisters, Mr. Kawashima, and finally, Yukino’s troop of friends (including Shibahime, who complains about not having enough lines) . This is so sudden and redundant that it’s enough to originate one wonder what the heck happened to the present where there were other points to choose.

Buy,Download, Or Stream His and Her Circumstances! Click Here

Matters do not improve with the next two episodes; the fourth one tells a pointless side memoir about a mysterious stalker tracking Yukino’s sisters, while the last one is, whoa, a complete mess. No longer is the action interesting, but now in the style of a silly book, with two offscreen narrators doing commentary. There’s very itsy-bitsy that is resolved here, and worse, we never collect to behold the play that Yukino and her friends were working hard on putting on! In other words, it objective stops instead of really finishing. “The script’s resplendent honest the map it is,” says one of Yukino’s friends. That would have been a more apt thing to say if the expose had a more conclusive ending!

It seems that animation studio Gainax — or in this case, director Hideaki Anno — displays a lot of promise when it comes to lively shows but has a part of problems when it comes to wrapping it up. NADIA started — and finished — wonderfully, but was plagued by a number of filler episodes which should never have been written. I realized then, that it wasn’t Gainax’s fault; the studio executives were trying to squeeze every last ounce of cash from the indicate and forced them into writing stuff that was irrelevant to the modern status (written by Hayao Miyazaki) . EVANGELION, on the other hand, got off to a decent beginning and seemed to present trusty progress until the indicate dissolved into a mind-bending turmoil of unanswerable questions — the folks didn’t even know HOW they wanted to kill the note, which resulted with two controversial final episodes and a theatrical attempt to recreate them (which was shiny but flawed), causing endless confusion and collected more heated debates about determining what the heck was going on. Sadly, this also applies to HIS AND HER CIRCUMSTANCES; the first four volumes were fun, lighthearted, but also comprehensible. The last volume has its moments but, toward the waste, turns into yet another case of nobody sparkling where they wanted to purchase the tale, mighty less effect it.

Too abominable, because HIS AND HER CIRCUMSTANCES has a LOT of exquisite things to be plagued by even one such glaring fault. That it falls into the same spot of “flawed, but worth a watch” set of Gainax’s other two shows is a letdown since the demonstrate stayed on its plateau great longer than its predecessors.

Buy,Download, Or Stream His and Her Circumstances! Click Here

Not that there’s nothing to recommend this volume, however. It’s aloof fun to peek Yukino and her friends goofing off, working together, and hanging out, and the extras provided on the DVD — which includes English Scream Actress outtakes and outrageously silly Phone Messages from the various characters (including one where Yukino tries to silence her sisters as she records her announce message) — warrant its consume.

As with Gainax’s other shows, HIS AND HER CIRCUMSTANCES is recommended for its assets but not without its flaws, most notably its lack of providing a definite, satisfying effect for viewers or fans.

As has already been pointed out, the 5th volume of His and Her Circumstances ends incredibly abruptly. And while the last couple episodes include a large deal of recap and filler fraction of the reason for the abrupt ending is that His and Her Circumstances is based on the manga Kare Kano by Masami Tsuda which was collected running when His and Her Circumstances was being produced. And as is often the case when a manga is made into an anime the anime producers will rep up to the unique manga and then either execute up the memoir on their have or insert filler.

There is actually a big deal of chronicle in the manga Kare Kano after the waste of the anime series. Unfortunately, everything I have read has indicated that while Gainax expressed interest in making another season of His and Her Circumstances there were some disagreements with Masami Tsuda over the direction of the prove and so there most likely won’t be another season.

Therefore I highly recommend that anyone who really loved His and Her Circumstances check out the manga which is currently being released in the US by Tokyopop. They currently have the first 5 manga volumes out which ends with the first half of the record on how Yukino’s parents met.

Spoiler alert: You might not want to read the following if you haven’t seen the movie yet.

Most of the reviews of Sirens at Amazon focus on Elle, the nudity in the movie, and themes surrounding the Church’s stance against freedom of expression. A few reviewers have touched intelligently on some of the biblical, Atlantean, and Homeric symbolism that suffuses the movie.

Only one reviewer, who happened not to like the film, touched on what I contemplate to be one of the most telling elements of the story: that Tara Fitzgerald’s character Estella cheats on her husband, Hugh Grant. The reviewer thinks this is a predicament, and it is, because Estella is a clergyman’s wife. This should require some explaining, as Estella changes a huge deal in a short amount of time during the film.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Sirens! Click Here

The veil of the movie shows Hugh Grant and Elle McPherson in poses suggesting a light-hearted romantic comedy. The movie is actually completely about Tara Fitzgerald’s character’s stagger. What are the clues? The movie starts with Estella both flirting with and rebuffing a sailor on an ocean liner. Hugh Grant is not in the scene at all.

The movie follows Estella mighty more closely than any of the other characters and at key moments we even study hallucinations as Estella sees them: when she imagines herself naked in church and most importantly, when she “dreams” that the sirens are baptizing her (with water that turns to blood, no less, at which point she “wants to wake up”) toward the kill of the movie. The offensive painting for which Estella and her husband disappear to Sam Neill’s house shows a woman crucified in Christ’s region, signalling that the female lead, not the male, is the protagonist.

But is the movie about Estella’s sexual awakening? Not really.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Sirens! Click Here

It is not until after she awakens from the dream described above that the viewer learns the ship on which Estella sailed was the Broad (contemplate above her head when she and Hugh Grant are on the swear leaving Australia–it is the same ship shown throughout the film) . What could this mean? Estella is drowning in the demolish of the Tall. As she is dying she experiences the events in the movie, a mix of Ulysses’ sailors drawn to their watery graves by the splendid sirens, a magical sprint to the island of Atlantis (Australia), and religious rumblings of the right tension between fidelity and self-expression. The “mission” to convince Sam Neill not to indicate his blasphemous painting represents Estella’s fight to stop alive. When she and her husband win that they will not change Sam Neill’s choose (including the fact that he has painted Estella), Estella is giving up her grip on life. Discover at the expression of relief and release on her face in the movie’s very last scene before fading to the sirens on the rocks.

With a seemingly slapped on ending in which Estella and husband leave some of their sexual repression leisurely them, voila: you have a movie that viewers indulge in but is quite a bit deeper, as well.

Check it out, it’s lovely and intelligent!

SIRENS, released in 1993, is a beguiling film that pokes fun at the sexual repression that may result from an overactive religious zeal. Hugh Grant, as the Anglican minister Anthony Champion newly arrived in early 20th century Australia, is asked by the bishop to pay a call on a local artist, Norman Lindsay, and to beseech him to withdraw from exhibition a painting considered disagreeable. Scare of horrors, it includes bare-naked ladies.

Anthony and his young spouse Estella, played by Tara Fitzgerald, near at Lindsay’s estate to accumulate the artist, portrayed by Sam Neill, busily painting away. Norman’s earthy wife and three resident female models wait on as his inspiration, and clothing on the four is, more oft than not, unabashedly optional. This in-your-face explain of live, nubile flesh leaves the Reverend rather tongue-tied and confused (as only Grant can play it) . At first, wife Estella shares her husband’s noble indignation. Then, the lush, humid, tropical surroundings and free-spirited lifestyle of the Lindsay estate, along with the presence of a hunky handyman, initiate to work their liberating magic on her repressed desires. (A very nice touch is the representation of Temptation as a huge serpent that slithers through occasional scenes unnoticed by anyone but the viewer.)

It all sounds potentially raunchy, but never is. Rather than being a manipulative, licentious debauchee, Neill’s on-screen persona is one of an amused, live and let live observer of human nature – a sort of quiet Hugh Hefner. There’s an abundance of casual nudity, but it’s almost artistically presented. The sexual nature of a couple scenes is more sensuous than bawdy. And, one of this film’s undeniable attractions is real-life model Elle MacPherson, who plays the role of one of the uninhibited SIRENS, and who shows an eyeful. Boy, does she ever. It’s an droll and well-done adult, fairy memoir.

This was so disappointing to me. “My Life as a Dog” was one of my all-time well-liked films. I already had it on video, and wanted to have a cleaner copy on DVD, as well as some features.

! IT IS NOT, I explain, *NOT* WIDESCREEN!

Worse, the transfer is grainy, and there seems to be tiny or no remastering. CRITERION would do a bang-up job on this film, it’s objective a shame that so many distributers can’t regain their act together and assign a runt trouble into what they’re doing.

Buy,Download, Or Stream My Life as a Dog – Criterion Collection! Click Here

If you want to hear commentary, scrutinize it in its new film ratio, or even behold a decent transfer for heaven’s sake, go to Criterion’s web-site and send them a message that you want to ogle this film done fair.

You might also go to Fox Lorber’s web station, and let them know you request more than VHS-on-a-disk. DVD, as a media, is in a primary position fair now, and the studios are trying to leer if the general public will gain bare-bones releases. We need to let them know that we won’t.

Few movies near this cessation to perfection. This is an shimmering and provocative tale of a boy who must reach to terms with abandonment, loss and the casual betrayal of adults. Extremely well acted on all sides, with a fearless script that dares to ask the primary questions. Ingemar must try to regain some balance in his life, as he is tossed from one “home” to another, like a stray dog… or, like the Soviet space-dog Laika, who was sent into spot only to starve to death in orbit. “They never intended to bring her wait on.” The final scenes of “My Life as a Dog” do salvage out, when the outlandish town’s crazy dilapidated man takes a swim in the frozen river. The whole cast of strange town-folk arrive out to “rescue” him, and offer him a spot by the fire, a blanket, a dinky whiskey… Here, Ingemar finds balance in the esteem of other people, so one is left, not with a sense of despair, but with a sense of hope in the midst of sorrow and loss.

Note: I recommend the subtitled version over the dubbed version, as the language and inflections should be experienced in plump.

This entry in the “Provocative Classics of Japanese Literature” series offers the two-part “The Harp of Burma,” based on the recent by Michio Takeyama, and “Season of the Sun,” from a chronicle by Shintaro Ishihara. In keeping with Central Park Media’s attempts to package these DVDs somewhat thematically, “Harp” is location fair at the demolish of World War II, while “Seasons” takes site ten years later and deals with young Japanese who are far more privileged than the prisoners of war in “Harp.”

Buy,Download, Or Stream Animated Classics of Japanese Literature: The Harp of Burma/Season of the Sun! Click Here

“Harp of Burma” is one of the most keen stories in the entire series. At 48 minutes, it condenses the short original on which it’s based (available in English), which was also made into a two-hour live-action film, Kon Ichikawa’s THE BURMESE HARP (1956) . Peaceful, it maintains the structure of the current and touches the main points of the memoir, which centers on a squad of Japanese soldiers in Burma who surrender to British and Indian troops when they learn the war is over. The focus is on the fate of one of their number, Mizushima, who is sent on a mission to talk some holdouts into surrendering, only to move for a long stretch and turn up as a Buddhist monk who visits his comrades but refuses to talk to them. When we finally learn the sage slack his transformation, it offers a dark and heartbreaking illustration of the irrevocable effects of war on a man’s psyche.

The character construct is quite simple, with Mizushima the only character differentiated in any considerable method, although this tactic actually works quite well. One essential element of the legend is the music and its power to communicate. Mizushima plays a Burmese harp both as a soldier and as a monk, and the Japanese soldiers mutter together quite frequently (including a Japanese version of “Home, Sweet Home”) . In fact, it is their singing when surrounded by British and Indian troops early in the memoir that prompts the British and Indians to tell in response, thereby encouraging a aloof surrender rather than a last-ditch firefight.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Animated Classics of Japanese Literature: The Harp of Burma/Season of the Sun! Click Here

“Season of the Sun” deals with a self-centered young boxer whose superior looks and physique attract the romantic attention of a well-off single woman at a seaside resort during a summer vacation. Their dates include scenes of lovemaking and nudity that are quite surprising in a prestigious, literary TV series of this type. The affair starts to go sour when the cocky young man begins mistreating the woman, seemingly out of boredom. As it turns out, although these “current” characters have considerably more freedom than the characters in earlier eras of Japanese history seen in other episodes of this series, they are ultimately no happier. The character accomplish is stronger and more detailed than in any other episode of this series I’ve yet seen. The backgrounds are rendered in spacious detail as well.

This volume is certainly on a par with the other respectable DVD entries in this series, “The Sound of Waves/Growing Up” and “Izu Dancer/Dancing Girl/Ghost Epic” (both of which are also reviewed on this dwelling) . Noburo Ishiguro, better known for directing parts of “Site Battleship Yamato” and “Macross” (Robotech), directed all three of the episodes on this disc.

It’s factual the animation in this series is basic, but the Japanese is wonderfully plain with suited pauses between sentences making this a stout series for studying Japanese language. It is also a improbable plan to learn about Japanese culture and literature.

Most students know about WWII through the eyes of the victims of Pearl Harbor or through the stories of the Rape of Nanking, but there generous Japanese soldiers as well. Japanese friends say the Harp of Burma is based on a true person. A Japanese soldier who is injured and lost in a fight and sees hundreds of his brother’s in arms lying on the battlefield. In the shinbutsu custom, generous burial is vital to the soul’s peace and so he feels compelled to engage care of his brethren.

This yarn of dedication is heart-warming.

Most students become familiar with classic works of western literature, such as Shakespeare, Hemingway and Hawthorne, but rarely do we score a recognize inside the mountainous works of literature in other cultures.

This is remarkable segment and the epic transends the spartan animation. Well worth the time and money.

Although I’m labeled “fear buff”, I unbiased had to write a review of this film depicting the life of celebrated Dr. Dian Fossey. Heads up to Warner Brothers for giving us a watch into the world of a woman who ultimately gave her life to keep and protect the few mountain gorillas remaining in Africa. Dian devoted 18 years of her life to researching and thought these amazing primates. This film shows Dian’s vunerable side along with her clear side to do what ever it took to achieve the gorillas who are supposed to be protected by the parks. Sigourney Weaver shines in her role and was the perfect choice for this movie. She approached it with reckless abandon. Although Dian lost her life trying to set the remaining gorillas, we accept to sight how one person was responsible for doing so noteworthy for the gorillas. With heartwarming scenes with her and her beloved Digit, to heartbreaking scenes like when she had to turn over Pucker, the infant gorilla she nursed befriend to health, to a zoo and the substandard death of Digit, this movie captivates you from beginning to slay. For anyone who is keen in the few remaining mountain gorillas, this movie will really originate your eyes and effect you route for Dian. Although with a tragic ending with Dian’s death and burial next to Digit, it’s a just savor epic not only between her and Bob Campbell, but between her and the gorillas she loved so distinguished. I wish I could give this movie more than 5 stars!! Definetly a movie to absorb and to worship… for her memory will never be forgotten as her work carries on thru The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International to this day.

I highly recommend this movie to anyone who has never seen it. I did earn the poaching scenes very disturbing and difficult to examine but that may be because I am a passionate animal lover and activist. They are however essential to bringing an notion to the abominable gorilla’s jam. Who would ever want a gorilla hand ashtray anyway….Base! It also broke my heart when Sigourney Weaver had to give up the orphaned gorilla she nursed attend to health to the zoo broker only to rep out she died a year later. If it weren’t for Dian Fossey efforts, gorillas might very well be frail by now. My praise goes out to her, as well as Ms. Weaver for the delicate job she did in portraying her.
